Supreme Court Allows Trump’s Military Trans Ban to Take Effect
President Trump has enacted a controversial executive order banning transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military. Titled “Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness,” the order claims gender identity conflicts with military discipline and truthfulness.
Though a federal judge blocked the policy in March, citing discrimination and equal protection violations, the Supreme Court ruled on May 6, 2025, that the ban can proceed while legal challenges continue. The decision passed without a signed opinion, with the Court’s liberal justices dissenting.
The ban has sparked backlash from human rights groups and legal advocates, who argue it is rooted in prejudice, not military readiness. Lawsuits representing active-duty trans members and prospective recruits are ongoing.
