Bill Gates Freaks Out on Live TV After Announcement from Trump

Bill Gates Questions Changes to USAID Amid Calls for Reform

Background on the Controversy

Recent news has drawn attention to significant proposed alterations within the structure of U.S. foreign aid. At the heart of the controversy lies a proposal supported by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has been investigating USAID’s operations and recommending drastic measures. Among the suggested reforms is the shuttering of USAID offices and the freezing of funds. In response, Bill Gates—widely recognized not only for his role as the co-founder of Microsoft but also for his philanthropic work in global health and development—has publicly voiced his concerns.

Gates’ Perspective on the Proposed Changes

Following the announcement that USAID offices would be closed and that the agency’s funding would be frozen, Gates took to the public stage to express his disquiet. In a series of remarks on live television, Gates criticized the approach of those advocating for these policy changes. He contrasted what he described as the innovative contributions of Elon Musk in the private sector with what he viewed as a lack of appreciation for the successes and established practices of government-led aid initiatives.

Gates remarked, “Well, Elon, his private sector work, you know, has been very innovative, really fantastic,” acknowledging Musk’s successes in business innovation. However, he quickly stressed that when it comes to government operations, particularly those related to international aid, it is crucial to understand the underlying reasons behind the established structure.

He further explained his worry by saying, “A lot of private sector people, when they get into government, they don’t take the time necessarily to see what the good work is or why it’s structured the way it is, so I’m a little worried, particularly with this USAID stuff.” This statement encapsulates Gates’ fear that the proposed reforms risk undermining a system that has been instrumental in advancing global health, ensuring food security, and promoting developmental progress in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions.

The Importance of USAID in Global Health and Development

Bill Gates has long been a staunch supporter of USAID’s mission. His foundation collaborates closely with USAID on critical projects ranging from nutrition programs to the distribution of vaccines. In his view, the agency plays a vital role in saving lives worldwide—a function that no private entity or philanthropic organization can fully replicate. Gates emphasized, “My foundation partners with USAID on nutrition and getting vaccines out, and, you know, there’s incredible people,” highlighting the dedication and expertise of those who work within the agency.
