\u201cI myself don\u2019t give away anything for nothing,\u201d Pelosi said. \u201cI think that\u2019s what happened the other day.\u201d<\/p>\n
The core of Pelosi\u2019s frustration lies in Schumer\u2019s decision to advance a six-month funding measure crafted by GOP leaders, which Democrats had hoped to either amend or replace with a short-term solution of their own. Pelosi argued that a more strategic delay could have pressured Republicans into negotiating a more balanced agreement.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe could have, in my view, perhaps gotten [Republicans] to agree to a third way,\u201d she added, referring to a 30-day extension Democrats proposed to allow more time for discussion. \u201cThey may not have agreed to it, but at least the public would have seen them not agreeing to it \u2014 then they would have been the ones shutting the government down.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pelosi had reportedly encouraged Democratic senators to reject the bill ahead of the vote, warning that accepting the deal as it stood amounted to giving in to partisan pressure.<\/p>\n
In a statement before the vote, she said, \u201cDonald Trump and Elon Musk have offered Congress a false choice between a government shutdown or a blank check that harms working families. This false choice is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite her sharp criticism, Pelosi made clear that she is now focused on moving forward. \u201cI\u2019m concerned about the next time. I\u2019m concerned about the future,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat happened last week was last week. We\u2019re going into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senator Schumer, meanwhile, defended his vote by emphasizing the broader consequences of a shutdown. \u201cThe bill is very bad,\u201d he admitted, \u201cbut the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse.\u201d<\/p>\n
His decision, however, has sparked notable frustration within his party. According to reports, scheduled events to promote Schumer\u2019s new book, Antisemitism in America: A Warning, were canceled due to unspecified security concerns.<\/p>\n
While other Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have remained mostly silent on the issue, the backlash appears to be growing. Prominent voices in the party, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have also shown concern over how Schumer is handling the party\u2019s position in the Senate.<\/p>\n
Political commentator and former Obama administration official Van Jones weighed in on CNN, noting that internal frustration has reached an unusually intense level.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can be grumpy, we can be frustrated,\u201d Jones said, \u201cbut this is a volcanic eruption of outrage at Leader Schumer. We want someone who stands up and fights back.\u201d<\/p>\n
Using a sports analogy, Jones added, \u201cThere\u2019s an emotional need to stop Donald Trump and Elon Musk from steamrolling this party. I think Chuck Schumer has radically misread the room.\u201d<\/p>\n
