Veteran political strategist and CNN contributor Scott Jennings is reportedly contemplating a high-profile leap into electoral politics, potentially aiming for the soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat in Kentucky following Mitch McConnell\u2019s retirement. However, sources say that Jennings is unlikely to move forward without a critical green light: the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Jennings, a native of Kentucky and a former advisor to both McConnell and President George W. Bush, is said to have made his intentions known in a candid moment at an afterparty for the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner. According to the Daily Beast, Jennings stated, \u201cIf the president wants me, I\u2019ll run. If he wants somebody else, I\u2019ll support that candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though he hasn\u2019t officially declared his candidacy, political observers believe Jennings could be a serious contender for the seat, especially given his rising national profile. Over the past year, he has become one of CNN\u2019s most prominent conservative commentators, regularly appearing on \u201cNewsNight with Abby Phillip,\u201d where his spirited debates and defense of conservative policies have made him a standout voice on the network.<\/p>\n

In fact, his role on CNN has grown so significantly that the network recently renewed his contract and gave him a substantial raise. Still, Jennings has not been given his own show, prompting speculation that he might pursue a broader political platform. According to the New York Post, his potential Senate run is \u201ccertainly not fake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump himself acknowledged Jennings\u2019 balancing act on national television during a rally in Michigan, joking, \u201cHe defends me all the time on CNN, and he defends me really well, but he can\u2019t go too far because he\u2019ll get fired.\u201d<\/p>\n

During that same rally \u2014 marking Trump\u2019s first 100 days back in office \u2014 Jennings was called to the stage by the former president. Embracing the moment with humor, he quipped, \u201cI\u2019ve got to get a farm in Michigan \u2014 because when you own as many libs as I do, you gotta get a place to put them all.\u201d The lighthearted jab drew laughter from the crowd and further showcased Jennings\u2019 ability to play both a political insider and media personality.<\/p>\n

Support for a Jennings candidacy is already taking shape among conservative figures. Prominent radio host Erick Erickson tweeted in February, \u201cCould I nominate [Scott Jennings] for the United States Senate from the Commonwealth of Kentucky? He\u2019d be a hell of a McConnell replacement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even some of his ideological opposites have acknowledged Jennings\u2019 effectiveness on TV. CNN colleague and former Obama adviser Van Jones once described him as a \u201clikable rascal,\u201d saying Jennings understands the need for a commentator to be sharp without crossing into villainy. \u201cHe knows how to dance that dance. It\u2019s a rare gift,\u201d Jones told the Daily Caller earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Still, Jennings is not the only Republican eyeing McConnell\u2019s seat. Former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron quickly threw his hat in the ring after McConnell announced his retirement in February. Congressman Andy Barr, another established GOP figure, also recently joined the contest.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Lexington businessman Nate Morris, another potential candidate, has publicly criticized his rivals, painting both Barr and Cameron as \u201cpuppets\u201d of McConnell. In a February social media post, Morris wrote, \u201cI\u2019m not gonna let Mitch McConnell dictate whether I run or not\u2026 He\u2019s turned his back on President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid these early maneuvers, the one figure who could immediately reshape the field is Donald Trump. So far, the former president has not endorsed anyone in the race. Jennings, it seems, is waiting to see which way the political wind blows from Mar-a-Lago before taking the plunge.<\/p>\n

Adding to Trump\u2019s unpredictable streak, he made headlines the same day in Michigan by unexpectedly praising Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer during a speech at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. \u201cYou know, I\u2019m not supposed to do that. She\u2019s a Democrat. They say, \u2018don\u2019t have her here.\u2019 I said, \u2018No, she\u2019s going to be here\u2026 she\u2019s done a very good job,\u2019\u201d Trump told an audience of service members.<\/p>\n

That moment of bipartisanship contrasted sharply with the calculated moves happening in Kentucky\u2019s GOP primary battle \u2014 where candidates and hopefuls like Jennings know that Trump\u2019s endorsement could determine their political future.<\/p>\n
