Microplastics\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acs.org\/pressroom\/presspacs\/2023\/november\/microplastics-found-in-clouds-could-affect-the-weather.html\">are in<\/a>\u00a0our clouds. They\u2019re in our tears. Our semen. And now, according to some disturbing lab results, all this nastiness is coming for our precious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/tag\/mcdonalds\/\">McDonald\u2019s<\/a>. Specifically, the McDonald\u2019s Filet-O-Fish packaging, which contains chemicals that have been unauthorized for food contact uses by the FDA since 2022, according to test results shared exclusively with VICE.<\/p>\n<p>Lab testing commissioned by the campaign group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fuckmcdonalds.org\/\">Fuck McDonald\u2019s<\/a>, and conducted by Symbio Laboratories in San Diego, detected at least six phthalates present in a used, empty Filet-O-Fish box from a New York McDonald\u2019s. Studies have shown that these kinds of chemicals can migrate from packaging into food.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of publication, McDonald\u2019s had not provided a comment in response to the test results.<\/p>\n<p>Phthalates, often added to plastics to enhance flexibility, have been associated with various potential health risks, particularly in infants born to pregnant women exposed to the chemicals. In a 2022\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8157593\/#:~:text=Despite%20the%20short%20half%2Dlives,both%20young%20children%20and%20adolescents.\">review<\/a>, researchers found robust evidence for an association with neurodevelopment issues, lower semen quality and risk of childhood asthma, and moderate to robust evidence for genital birth defects in boys. A 2018\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/142\/2\/e20181408\/37584\/Food-Additives-and-Child-Health?autologincheck=redirected\">report<\/a>\u00a0from the American Academy of Pediatrics also stated that certain phthalates used in food packaging could contribute to cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<p>In May of 2022, the FDA deauthorized the use of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2022\/05\/20\/2022-10531\/indirect-food-additives-adhesives-and-components-of-coatings-paper-and-paperboard-components\">23 phthalates<\/a>\u00a0in food packaging, following a petition. Six of those chemicals \u2013 dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, benzylbutyl phthalate and didecyl phthalate \u2013 were detected in the Filet-O-Fish box tested by Symbio Laboratories. All six chemicals have been linked to an increased risk of impaired male reproductive development. Or, as Fuck McDonald\u2019s puts it, they\u2019ll \u201csuper-shrink a peen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Filet-O-Fish has been a staple of the McDonald\u2019s menu since 1965, with USA Today\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/02\/22\/mcdonalds-filet-o-fish-invented-lent-ash-wednesday\/11322820002\/\">suggesting<\/a>\u00a0in 2023 that the chain now sells around 300 million sandwiches a year.
