First lady Jill Biden had a lot to say in what is likely her last interview before she and her husband, President Joe Biden, leave the White House on January 20 and some of it was about her predecessor and successor Melania Trump.<\/p>\n
In speaking with The Washington Post in an interview that was done weeks ago but published this week, the outgoing first lady said that she invited Melania for tea, and the once and future first lady declined.<\/p>\n
\u201cJoe and I respect our institutions, our traditions,\u201d she said, \u201cand it\u2019s very important to me that they continue and we \u2014 \u201d she said before hesitating and sounding resigned, \u201cWhat would be the point of nastiness?\u201d<\/p>\n
She said she did leave a note for the next first lady hat she handed to Presidenrt-elect Donald Trump at the opening of the Notre Dame Cathedral in France.<\/p>\n
\u201cI congratulated her and I offered help,\u201d Jill said.<\/p>\n
She said the president-elect told her, \u201cI had a good meeting with your husband in the Oval Office.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d she recalled saying to Trump, \u201cbecause you\u2019re both talkers.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also did not mince words about her feelings for former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s just say I was disappointed with how it unfolded,\u201d she told the Post regarding how Pelosi was reportedly behind the push to have Joe Biden drop his reelection bid.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy?\u201d the reporter said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know. I learned a lot about human nature,\u201d the first lady said before being pressed and saying, \u201cI think that\u2019s all I\u2019m going to say.\u201d<\/p>\n
But that was not all she said.<\/p>\n
The reporter got to direct questions about Pelosi, who famously said, when asked if President Biden was going to stay in the campaign against President-elect Donald Trump, \u201cIt\u2019s up to the president to decide if he is going to run,\u201d after Biden already said he was staying in the hunt for the White House.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike I said,\u201d the first lady said to The Washington Post reporter, \u201cI\u2019ve been thinking a lot about relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been on my mind a lot lately, and \u2014 \u201d Jill continued before a pause and then began using her \u201cteacher\u2019s voice,\u201d according to the reporter.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were friends for 50 years,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n
It may be the reason the first lady appeared so happy when Trump visited the White House and why the two got along so well at the opening ceremony in France last month.<\/p>\n
Trump stated that his private conversation with Jill inside the cathedral was a positive interaction despite their long history of exchanging harsh remarks during the two election cycles, the New York Post reported.<\/p>\n
\u201cVery nice. She couldn\u2019t have been nicer,\u201d Trump said about their talk.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s politics. You have to get used to it,\u201d he said regarding political differences in the past. \u201cShe was very nice, and we had a very nice conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump also revealed insights from his discussions with global leaders during that first international trip since securing a second term, including a trilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wants to make peace,\u201d Trump told the New York Post in a phone interview of Zelensky. \u201cThat\u2019s new.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wants to have a ceasefire,\u201d he added. \u201cHe wants to make peace. We didn\u2019t talk about the details. He thinks it\u2019s time, and Putin should think it\u2019s time because he\u2019s lost \u2014 when you lose 700,000 people, it\u2019s time. It\u2019s not going to end until there\u2019s a peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
