Money is a sophisticated subject because some people save it, others spend it wisely, and then there are those who end up wasting it. In this collection, we have found a series of short stories about people who lost their money in unpredicted and surprising ways.<\/p>\n

Story 1:
\nA guy I worked with had a long-distance relationship with this girl he\u2019d yet to meet in person. Then, suddenly, she told him she could fly out and meet him in a month. At the time, he lived in the basement of his folks\u2019 place\u2014not something he had disclosed earlier in their chats. In a panic, he got a new apartment.<\/p>\n

Then he went to one of those furniture rental places and rented an entire apartment\u2019s worth of furniture: a couch, tables, a dining set, a bedroom suite, a TV, etc. The whole apartment was filled with rental furniture, which, if you don\u2019t know, gets expensive really quickly. So after all this, the girl finally showed up. They went to his apartment, and that\u2019s when she told him that they should break up.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t want to do it over text and without meeting him at least once. She thought it wouldn\u2019t be fair to him. She stayed one night and got on the plane the next day. Apparently, her stop in our city was just an extended layover as she was heading to Europe to tour with friends.She slept in the rental bed, and he slept on the rental couch. The next day, he drove her to the airport in his rental car. I don\u2019t know how many thousands he dropped for that one breakup date, but man\u2026 what a waste.<\/p>\n

Story 2:I decided to fulfill a childhood dream and install a single-lane bowling alley in my basement for $50,000. It sounded like the perfect way to host parties and keep myself entertained. But after the novelty wore off, I realized no one wanted to bowl more than a game or two.<\/p>\n

Now I\u00a0just have an\u00a0incredibly noisy, space-hogging reminder of\u00a0my\u00a0poor impulse control. I\u00a0could\u2019ve gone on\u00a020\u00a0amazing vacations with that money instead of\u00a0sitting alone in\u00a0my\u00a0basement, throwing gutter balls.<\/p>\n

Story 4:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I\u00a0wasted my\u00a0money on\u00a0a\u00a0\u201cfree trial\u201d of\u00a0a\u00a0muscle-building supplement. I\u00a0was in\u00a0my\u00a0first year of\u00a0college and decided\u00a0I wanted to\u00a0get in\u00a0better shape but didn\u2019t know where to\u00a0start. I\u00a0clicked an\u00a0ad\u00a0saying it\u00a0could help build muscle fast, got my\u00a0free bottle in\u00a0the mail, and started seeing a\u00a0bunch of\u00a0weird charges on\u00a0my\u00a0card. They didn\u2019t charge for that first bottle, but they charged a\u00a0subscription fee.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0immediately called the bank to\u00a0have my\u00a0card blocked, but by\u00a0that time, I\u00a0was out something like $100 that\u00a0I couldn\u2019t afford as\u00a0a\u00a0student. I\u00a0kept getting spam calls too and had to\u00a0tell the rep very firmly that\u00a0I wanted to\u00a0be\u00a0unsubscribed.<\/p>\n

Story 5:\u00a0When I\u00a0was a\u00a0recent graduate, I\u00a0was scammed by\u00a0an\u00a0insurance company. I\u00a0was just so\u00a0happy to\u00a0be\u00a0hired by\u00a0anyone that\u00a0I was duped into thinking\u00a0I could make money by\u00a0selling people insurance they didn\u2019t want or\u00a0need.<\/h2>\n

I\u00a0paid $350 for a\u00a0textbook for an\u00a0exam to\u00a0become certified. Although I\u00a0passed the exam, I\u00a0realized within a\u00a0week that the company was a\u00a0scam\u2014complete with a\u00a0ridiculous script that, if\u00a0we\u00a0went off\u00a0it, we\u00a0would get in\u00a0trouble\u2014and cold calling.
\nWorst. Mistake. Ever.<\/p>\n

Story 7:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u00a0once got locked out of\u00a0my\u00a0car one night. I\u00a0called the first name on\u00a0the Google search. I\u00a0was given a\u00a0quote of\u00a0$60, so\u00a0I\u00a0agreed. The \u201clocksmith\u201d only used a\u00a0slim jim to\u00a0open my\u00a0door, and\u00a0I was charged $130. I\u00a0had no\u00a0choice but to\u00a0pay and walk away very sad.<\/h2>\n

Story 8:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In\u00a0times of\u00a0need, I\u00a0had to\u00a0sell a\u00a0very expensive camera (around $900) that I\u2019d bought with my\u00a0very first salary and that was really dear to\u00a0me. I\u00a0was young, and some guy responded to\u00a0my\u00a0offer via email, telling me\u00a0he\u00a0was interested but was on\u00a0a\u00a0business trip. He\u00a0said it\u00a0would be\u00a0nice of\u00a0me\u00a0to\u00a0send it\u00a0to\u00a0some place in\u00a0Africa, and assured me\u00a0he\u2019d pay for any extra costs.<\/p>\n

Not only did he\u00a0never pay me\u00a0for anything, but\u00a0I also ended up\u00a0paying a\u00a0hundred dollars for the shipping. Lesson learned, but I\u2019m still sad to\u00a0this day when\u00a0I think about\u00a0it.<\/p>\n

Story 10:\u00a0<\/strong>My\u00a0boyfriend planned a\u00a0romantic weekend at\u00a0a\u00a0luxury hotel. Everything felt perfect\u2014until checkout. His card got declined, and he\u00a0turned red with embarrassment. I\u00a0smiled and paid for our stay.<\/h2>\n

As\u00a0we\u00a0were leaving, the receptionist discreetly pulled me\u00a0aside and said, \u201cBe\u00a0careful, I\u2019ve seen this guy do\u00a0the same thing with other women. He\u00a0comes here, his card gets declined, and they end up\u00a0paying for everything. You\u2019re being scammed!\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u00a0chose not to\u00a0believe her. We\u00a0were still early in\u00a0our relationship, and\u00a0I trusted him completely\u2014I had no\u00a0reason not\u00a0to. But over time, he\u00a0started pulling similar tricks more often. I\u00a0noticed he\u00a0was making me\u00a0pay for shopping trips and other expenses. The final straw came when he\u00a0tried to\u00a0steal my\u00a0money by\u00a0pressuring me\u00a0to\u00a0invest in\u00a0a\u00a0shady scheme.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0broke up\u00a0with him. Yet the memory of\u00a0that hotel stay still haunts me\u00a0because it\u00a0was the beginning of\u00a0it\u00a0all, and\u00a0I wish\u00a0I had listened to\u00a0that girl.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
