Barack and Michelle Obama have been the subject of divorce rumors for some time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Michelle, however, used Wednesday\u2019s occasion to not only directly address these accusations but also to highlight the irrational demands society has on women.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mother and public figure<\/h2>\n

Michelle Obama appeared as a guest on Sophia Bush\u2019s podcast,\u00a0Work in Progress<\/a>, on Wednesday. Nine minutes into the conversation, the former First Lady gave a very intimate account of how her life has changed since her daughters, Sasha (age 23) and Malia (age 26), moved out.<\/p>\n

She disclosed that the straightforward yet freeing aspect of being an\u00a0\u201cempty nester\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0is her favorite aspect:<\/p>\n

\u201c[Life] is whatever I want, Sophia, It\u2019s whatever I want,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0she said with a joyful tone.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Obama has long juggled the hard responsibilities of being a mother, public person, and partner, frequently putting her children\u2019s needs and her husband Barack Obama\u2019s profession ahead of her own<\/p>\n

However, now that her family has grown and she is in a new phase of her personal life, she is taking back control.<\/p>\n

But having the autonomy to choose for oneself wasn\u2019t always simple, especially for a woman. Obama described the difficulty many women encounter in granting themselves the right to put their own needs first.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe interesting thing is that, when I say \u2018no,\u2019 for the most part people are like, \u2018I get it.\u2019 And I\u2019m OK,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Michelle explained.<\/p>\n

Then, as she discussed public opinion and the criticism that occasionally results from claiming her independence, her tone changed from humorous to somber.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the thing that we as women, I think\u2026 we struggle with disappointing people. I mean, so much so, that this year people were\u2026 they couldn\u2019t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
